Local walks in and around Tresaith
There are many beautiful walks near to Ty Nant, below are a selection of our favourite ones.
1) From the house to the beach
Rather than just walking down the road, there are 2 more scenic routes to the beach.
1a) Short route (10 mins)
Turn left as you come out of Ravenscroft then almost immediately take the first footpath to the right, climbing over the stile.
Follow the hedge down and round to the left to another style in the corner of the field.
Cross the bridge over the steam, then follow the path up to the right.
Climb over the next stile and walk through the garden and down the drive of the Yoga House.
Turn right on reaching the road, then go left down the steps by the bus stop to the beach.
1b) Longer, but very pretty walk to the beach (20 mins)
Turn left as you come out of Ravenscroft and walk up the lane for about ¼ mile until you reach a footpath sign leading down the driveway to a farm/holiday accommodation on your right hand side. (Look out for the eggs for sale sign.)
Follow the driveway/path round to the left past the small pond, and go through the metal gate on your right, marked with a footpath sign.
Walk down to the small footbridge and up to the left corner of the field on the other side to another gate.
Turn right, passing through a kissing gate.
Walk down through the woods, ignoring the path that forks uphill on your left, until you reach a small stile. Climb over this and walk through the garden and down the drive of the Yoga House.
Turn right on reaching the road, then go left down the steps by the bus stop to the beach.
2) Short strolls from the house, with lovely views of the sea
Turn left as you come out of Ravenscroft then immediately take the small footpath that runs alongside the stream at the back of the house. This brings you into the corner of a field. Walk along the bank for a short distance before climbing up the hill along the hedge. In the top corner of the field, you can either:
2a) Turn left, following the hedge along the right hand edge of the next field, back down towards the steam. Cross over the bridge, then walk diagonally across the next field to the gate. Walk down the track which brings you onto the lane up behind the house. Walk back down the hill to the house.
2b) Go straight on until you see a style/gate on your right. Take this path and walk across the field to the narrow farm track. You will pass a caravan and then a cottage, walking down the hill until you reach the lane. Turn right and walk down the hill back to Ravenscroft.
3) Cliff top walk to Aberporth (45 mins to an hour, one way)
Walk down the road, or follow Walk 1(a) above and go down to Tresaith Beach.
Walk along the back of the beach to pick up the coastal path that climbs up the cliff to the left hand side of the beach. There are some great views of the beach, waterfall and coast from here.
Follow the cliff top path all the way into Aberporth.
Enjoy a rest on the beach, or some refreshments in one of the village’s cafes or bars, before strolling home again.
If you don’t want to walk back again, check out the bus times before leaving Tresaith, or if you can, leave a car at the far end.
4) Penbryn Beach (15 mins each way)
Penbryn Beach is a 10 minute drive from the house. Park in the National Trust Car Park (charges apply to non-members) and walk down the road to the beach.
After a stroll on the beach walk back up through the words. Simply take the coastal path to your right as you leave the beach, across the wooden footbridge.
Turn left and keep following that path up along the stream, through an old quarry, and up the hill through the woods. (Don’t take the higher path, unless you want to do a longer and more strenuous cliff top walk back to Tresaith.)
Keep going until you see the footpath sign on the left, and descend the steep steps down to the stream.
Cross the bridge and walk towards the waterfall, before climbing up the steps back to the car park.
If open, the Plump Tart Café offers a delicious cream tea!
5) More Coastal Path Walks
For more strenuous walkers, there are many sections of the Coastal Path that offer some wonderful walks with some fabulous views. The stretch from Cwmtydu to New Quay is stunning for example. But here are a few favourite coastal path walks close to Ty Nant.
5a) Mwnt (4 mile walk)
Park in the National Trust Car Park on the cliff behind the beach.
Walk around the headland to the right of the beach. This is a great place to spot seals and dolphins and you can enjoy the views up the coast towards Cardigan Island.
Visit the old chapel then join the coastal path and walk along the cliffs back in the direction of Aberporth.
Pick up the footpath that leads back inland to the lane.
On reaching the lane, turn right and follow the lane until you see the footpath sign to the right.
Follow this footpath back to the car park.
5b) Tresaith to Penbryn (full circuit, 3 to 3.5 miles)
The coastal path walk from Tresaith to Penbryn is stunning, but there are some steep climbs, so if you don’t want to walk back, and you have more than 1 car, you could leave at the National Trust Car park in Penbryn and just do the walk one way.
To start, walk down the lane from Ty Nant towards Tresaith.
Pick up the coastal path on the right hand side of the road, by the stream, just before the junction where you go down to the beach.
Follow the steep path up the hill and then along the cliffs to Penbryn.
If you wish to go down to the beach, drop down to the lower path and go over the wooden footbridge. If not, stay on the higher path until it drops down through the woods to the river and the waterfall.
Climb the steps up to the Plwmp Café and National Trust Car Park.
For the return route:
Take the lane out of the car park then turn right. As the road bends look for the footpath to your left and climb up the hill.
Look for another path to your right and follow the ridge through the open field, past the pond and behind the caravan park.
Join the lane and go straight across, following the lane all the way back down the hill to Ty Nant.
5c) Penbryn to Morfa (2.5 miles, 90 minutes)
Park in the National Trust Car Park at Penbryn, then take the coastal path which leads off to the right at the top of the lane which leads down to the beach.
The path follows a farm track up the hill. Follow it round to the left and up to the cliffs where you get a lovely view back over Penbryn Beach to Aberporth.
Walk along the cliff path, until you get to the back of a tiny hidden beach. If you have the energy, drop down to the beach. Alternatively, stay on the path until you see a path up the hill on your right.
This path climbs upwards and brings you to a farm & set of holiday cottages.
Turn left onto the lane. Walk along the lane and then turn right at the junction, passing between another farm and another set of holiday cottages at Morfa.
After ¼ mile, you will spot a footpath sign on your right which leads through a metal gate and then up the hill along a path between two hedges (an old country lane).
Keep going along this route, up and then down the hill, past a beautiful Georgian style country house, until you reach the junction with the coastal path.
Go through the gate and turn left, retracing your steps back down the farm track to the car park at Penbryn.
5d) Llangrannog (3 miles, 90 minutes)
Park in the free Car Park on the road leading down into the village of Llangrannog. As you come out of the car park, turn right and follow the lane back up the hill. Just before the hairpin bend, look for the footpath that leads off to your left, through the woods.
Follow this footpath until you come to a farm with a set of holiday cottages. Walk through the yard onto the lane. Turn left along the lane, across the river and up to the junction.Go straight across, taking the lane signposted to the Urdd Centre.
Walk through the Urdd centre. Just after the the go-cart track and the dry sky slope, you will see the gate onto the coastal path. Turn left and follow the path up and along the cliffs.
Just before the mound (the site of an old Iron Age fort), bear left, taking the less marked path down, diagonally, to pick up the path that leads around the front of the mound.
If you are feeling energetic, you can drop down and explore the peninsular of Ynys Lochtyn. In the summer months, there are sometimes seals to be seen on the beach to the right of the headland. Otherwise, just continue along the lower coastal path, finally dropping down onto Llangrannog beach by Café Patio. (If the tide is out you can drop down earlier to Cilborth Beach and walk around the rocks past Llangrannog’s iconic stack.)
After taking some refreshments in one of Llangrannog’s cafes or pubs, walk back up the road out of Llangrannog (with the Ship inn on your left as you leave), turning right at the top of the village back up to the free car park. (In the summer month’s there is a Shuttle Bus which runs from the bus stop at the back of the main beach up to the free car park, which will save you this last stretch, if you are tired.)
